Smile! with Maja Design

Hello friends!

Popping in today to share a layout I made for Maja Design using their Vintage Summer Basics, working with turquoise, blue and grey.

Here is the layout:

You can see where the idea for the color palette came from; sometimes when I'm need of inspiration the photo helps a lot and I managed to match the papers from the Summer Vintage collection perfectly.

Some close-ups:

My Blue Fern Studios chipboards (Notebook Edges and XOXO) which I altered. For Notebook edges I blended different gelato colors and did some script stamping. For the heart it was also gelato but a generous coat of crackle paint. My background was a lot of sponge dabbing with Ayeeda paints.

My title piece, layered on top of a Graduated Square frame, on top of the many layers of Vintage Summer papers I have layered. The idea is to create a triangular visual flow that accents the photo itself, so I arranged the papers and chipboards (right down to the size) used to achieve that. Lots of textural details in the background too using microbeads and distress glitter, as well as more intense color to contrast against the simplicity and slightly desaturated colors of the photo.

Simple heat embossing and paint splattering.

And that's all I have for today. Thanks for dropping by!

xoxo for 13@rts, an Epic challenge and Color fun!

Hello friends!

I'm in today on a fabulous Monday to share a layout I created using a mix of my new collection Mental Vacation and Olga Heldwein's Starlight, as well as the gorgeous new mediums in the 13@rts store. I have also entered this for the Epic challenge over at Scrap Around the World where I was also an Epic challenge winner last year, as well as my first time entering for Words and Paintery. The sketch inspiration came from Sketchabilities which I flipped (although I'm not sure whether I'm eligible or not!). It's been awhile since I entered any challenge at all and it was really all for fun!

My background was created with four different Ayeeda paint and mist colors - over a stenciled design with modeling paste on my paper Hallerbos. The inspiration for the colors came from Word and Paintery. To create the textures, I mixed Coral matt paint with 3D fillers and sprinkled on generous amounts of sand grit, more plastic fillers and mica flakes. To seal the whole thing, I painted liquid medium over. Before everything is dried, I randomly arranged black and grey threads around the paste I have made. These were inspired by some of the photos from the SATW mood board.

Some close-ups:

My title which is a chipboard piece from Blue Fern Studios. It was primed with a mixture of black gesso and plastic fillers, and glazed over Violet metallic paint.

The resin frame was colored with random splatters of Lilac chalk mist. The tags were created with Olga's papers (Sagittarius) which I had distressed the edges with first: a layer of black gesso and secondly, gold embossing powder and sand grit. This was inspired by one of the pictures in the SATW mood board where there was a ring of confetti on the martini glass.

I like to layer Blue Fern chipboards and for this layout, I primed them with white gesso, followed by Lavender matt paint and Violet Purple paint. Then I painted on Lilac chalk mist and watered it randomly before some stamping. Lastly it was a layer of tinted embossing powder and distressing with black gesso.

One of the fun bits I enjoyed creating are the leaves and vines. These were craft colored when I got them, and I was debating whether to alter them or not. Adventure got the best of me and I primed them with black gesso. Then it was a layer of glaze using Violet metallic paint, followed by stamped script which I embossed in gold. Then I took Gold pearl paint and glazed over the vines

Wow, that was a lot of altering and layering! I hope you enjoyed the techniques I shared here and use them in your own projects. Thank you for dropping by the blog!

It's a Girl with Maja Design

Hello friends!

As you can see, I'm busy catching up with posts and DT assignments and today, it's a card for Maja Design. I realise that ever since I started with them I've been making a lot more cards and that's because their papers are perfect for just about any type of paper crafting! It also means I have more personalized gifts for people who have been a great part of my life and in this digital age, a handmade card is definitely something refreshing to get in your mailbox.

So here is the card:

I got a pack of the Crea Diem collection in my box but the colors are so nicely muted that I mixed it with some cut-outs from the Vintage Baby collection which I have left over, to make this Baby Girl card for a friend who is due to have hers soon.

Some close-ups:

A simple background of mists from 13@rts and stenciled texture paste over my layers of papers, plus my must-have floral cluster. Some stamping with a vine stamp as well to create the effect of spreading leaves and direction.

Another must-have - Blue Fern Studios chipboard which I have layered 4 different shades of pink/lilac on for a dimensional look.

And that's all I have for today. Thank you for dropping by!

Sparkle with 13@rts

Hello everyone!

Back in again mid week to share a little OTP project for 13@rts! Today, it's all about black!

Let me just share a little about the inspiration behind this. We managed to see the Milky Way while in Australia and my mind has been filled with sparkles and glitter and dark background ever since. And my friend Lizzy-Hill had to come along and inspire me with a great idea of mica flakes and such for my next project. So here it is!

My boss Aida packed in this plain wooden holder in my DT package and I knew I had to use black gesso on it. To create texture, I wrapped a nice piece of lace around (which just happened to be the right size, thanks YY!) and painted over it with black matte paint and silver glitter paint. That's how I got that sparkly look in the background.

This is a chipboard word piece designed by Olga Heldwein and I painted it with a generous layer of Old Gold Metallic paint for a dimensional look. The photo doesn't quite do it justice, but the shine is just amazing.

The little stuff I have to make more texture. There was first a layer of mica flakes, then sand grit, then a nice thick paste of gold pearl paint with Ayeeda Magic Powder.

For this chipboard piece from Blue Fern Studios, I used black gesso instead of my usual white because I wanted to use the Green Metallic paint as a glaze. See how the mica inside shines!

And all over the edge of the top I used the same thick paste I made with Gold Pearl Paint and Magic Powder to create an outline.

That's all I have for you today. What will you do if you had black gesso?

love,

xoxo with Made With Love

Hello friends!

It's good to be back from a much needed family holiday which we take once a year; just ourselves and enjoying our time together as a family. More because of the cold weather which we specifically said "NO MORE" but in the end couldn't resist. Now I'm sitting at my desk, in my singlets and shorts, breaking into a sweat with the fan on at full blast. Welcome home indeed LOL

Today I have a post with my LSS Made With Love, and I thought it would be a good time to make use of it to highlight certain things. A lot of students who take my mixed media classes at the store are new to the genre; some in fact have not done any scrapping before. But that did not stop them from being creative and surprising me with their gorgeous projects (I like to tell them to let go and just reproduce the techniques, not the sample). Still, it would be helpful to give a little introduction to what this whole mixed media thing is about.

So firstly, here is my inspiration layout. I have deliberately kept it as simple as I can so that some points are more obvious.

So what is mixed media? It is basically the use of more than one type of medium to create a piece of art; could be a layout, or canvas, art journal or altered item. To that definition, using gesso as a primer, followed by texture paste and then your mists would fall under the mixed media category - with texture paste and mists counting as two mediums. But simply priming your surface and then using 4 or 5 different colored sprays does not qualify as mixed media per se.

Another thing about mixed media is that it need not necessarily be heavily layered or appear complicated. In this layout alone, I have used a total of 9 different mediums, all of which are available from the Made With Love store. My layers come mainly from allowing one layer of medium to dry before applying on the next. Dimension-wise I have used at most cardboard pieces in place of foam dots to prop up my patterned paper. Otherwise, it would be a rather flat piece.

Think you can identify all the 9 mediums used? Try before you scroll down to the end!

Some close-ups:

Believe it or not, the chipboard you see here alone (from Blue Fern Studios) has 4 mediums! I'll give you a clue- it's a mix of heat embossing and lots of painting...

And here is the list of mediums (and products) used, all available from the store:

Old Gold Embossing Powder (Rangers)
UTEE (Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel)
Color Lab Pigment Powder - Teal (Marion Smith)
Texture Paste (Rangers)
Versacolor Ink - Mauve
Distress Ink - Walnut Stain
Distress Stain - Worn Lipstick
Distress Paint - Victorian Velvet
Acrylic Paint - Black (Kaisercraft)

Patterned Papers - Websters Pages
Cardstock - American Crafts
Chipboards - Blue Fern Studios
Twine
Wire Trim - Prima
Word Stamp - Kaisercraft

And that's just the very basic introduction. If you would like to find out more about the mixed media genre of scrapbooking, do enquire at the store for more information about the workshops we have in store for you every month!

Moments in Time with Blue Fern Studios

Hi everyone!

Where has all the time gone to? We're already in the month of May and I'm happy to share a layout I created for Blue Fern Studios using the gorgeous new Deja Vu collection.

Here is the project:

I picked these papers from the collection as they matched the colors from my photo quite perfectly. It's one of the very few of me with my kids as I'm usually the one behind the camera.

Here are some close-ups:

Layering gorgeous Blue Fern Studios chipboards with the papers and burlap. I had used quite a number of mediums for this page and the chipboards and some of you have already asked for the colors as well. There will be a full list at the end of this post.

More details here. I'm so glad that my LSS finally brought back the clear crackle medium from Ranger's. So far, it's the best I've used.  Just remember to seal it with gel as the cracks form as they can fall off easily.

My title piece, from "Petite Cartes", and more layering with chipboard, papers and lace.

Creating a velvet texture on my leaves using 13@rts new product - Magic Powder.

My usual floral cluster.

Some details of the lace and chipboard, which I colored to look like the background paper.

Mini tags made from "Petite Cartes" cut-out.

And here is the start to finish video of how I put this whole page together:

List of mediums:

13@rts - Matt paint (Lavender, Mahogany), Metallic Paint (Purple), modeling paste, sand grit, Pastel Mist (Lavender), Splash! Acrylic Ink (White)
Shimmerz - Inklingz (Coral Reef, Pugnacious Purple, Spotlight White, Tarnished Treasure)
Lindy's Stamp Gang - Magicals (Bells of Ireland Green, Lucky Shamrock Green)
Rangers - Distress Paint (Mustard)
Colorarte - Twinking H2O (Alfafa)

And with a new month, it's a new sketch challenge too! Michele Singh has designed the following sketch and do check out the design team's lovely interpretations of it!

And that's all I have for today. Have a great day ahead!
